Even in February's depths, when winter feels eternal and heavy, our little café stands as a beacon of warmth and possibility on New Malden High Street. Like the first snowdrops pushing through frozen earth, we see signs of renewal all around us – in the steaming cups shared between friends, in the laughter that fills our corners, and in the stories exchanged over freshly baked treats.

As Valentine's Day approaches, let's celebrate not just romantic love, but the deep bonds of community that sustain us through these dark days. Speaking of love – don't forget our Valentine's poetry competition closes this Friday! Warm your hearts and ours by sharing your verses over a hot cup of coffee!

Together, we'll keep each other's spirits bright until spring arrives.

This week:

  • The origins of Valentines Day

  • Our entry in the poetry competition

  • Romantic ideas in Kingston

Lots of love

The Sweet & Surprising Origin of Valentine’s Day

Love is in the air! But did you know that Valentine’s Day wasn’t always about chocolates, roses, and candlelit dinners? The story of this romantic holiday has a bit of mystery, a touch of history, and even a sprinkle of rebellion.

Legend has it that Valentine’s Day dates back to ancient Rome. Around 270 AD, Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than husbands, so he banned young men from getting married. Enter our hero, a kind-hearted priest named Valentine. Believing that love should never be outlawed, he secretly performed weddings for couples in love. When the emperor found out, he was not pleased. Valentine was imprisoned and, as the story goes, fell in love with the jailer’s daughter. Before his execution, he left her a note signed, “From your Valentine.” Sound familiar?

While the history is a little fuzzy, one thing is clear - love and kindness have been celebrated on February 14th for centuries. By the Middle Ages, Valentine’s Day became associated with courtly romance, and by the 1800s, people were exchanging handmade love notes.

Fast forward to today, and Valentine’s Day is celebrated worldwide with sweet treats, thoughtful gifts, and heartfelt messages. Speaking of sweet treats, why not celebrate with a cozy moment at Barnaby & Boos? Whether you’re here with your Valentine, your best friend, or just treating yourself, we’ve got all the love (and lattes) you need.

Happy Valentine’s Day! ❤️

Roses are red, coffee is hot,You’re the best Valentine I ever got!

Like a fresh brew on a chilly day,

You warm my heart in the best kind of way.

You’re the sprinkles on my ice cream cone,

The caramel drizzle I’ll never outgrow.

Like a pup with a wag and a happy bark,

You light up my life and warm my heart.

If love were coffee, you'd be my whipped cream,

Blending so smoothly, the perfect dream.

If love were gelato, you’d be the scoop,

Sweet and delightful in every group!

Like a dog on a walk, tail wagging with glee,

You bring pure joy and laughter to me.So let’s grab a latte, a pup cup or two,

Because Valentine’s is better at B&Bs - and with you!

Happy Valentine’s Day! ☕🐶❤️
