When Was Salted Caramel Invented? This Pup's Guide to Our RETURNING Flavor!

Hello my two-legged friends! Barnaby here, the official taste-testing schnauzer of Barnaby&Boo's! My whiskers are TINGLING with excitement because our MOST SCRUMPTIOUS Sea Salted Caramel Hackney Gelato is BACK on the menu! happy dance, spins in circle.

The Day Humans Finally Got Something Right!

Let me dig up the history of this AMAZING treat for you! Back in 1977 (that's like 63 dog years ago!), a human named Henri Le Roux in a place called Brittany, France (I've never been, but I hear they have excellent sidewalks for walking) created the first official salted caramel candy. He called it "Caramel au Beurre Salé" which is fancy human talk for "THE MOST DELICIOUS THING EVER."

This Le Roux human must have been part doggo because he KNEW that combining sweet and salty things makes your tongue do the happy dance! His creation even won "Best Sweet in France" in 1980. If I had been on the judging panel, I would've given it ALL the awards and maybe also my favorite squeaky toy. That's how good it is!

From Fancy France to My Food Bowl!

Now, I'm not exactly sure which brilliant human first thought to put this magical flavor into gelato, but by the mid-2000s, fancy chefs were putting salted caramel in EVERYTHING!

And then—BEST DAY EVER—it made its way to Barnaby&Boo's via Hackney Gelato, where I personally supervised the serving of our favourite flavour with my highly sensitive schnauzer nose. sniff sniff I can detect the EXACT moment when the sugar has been caramelized to pawfection!

Why It Makes My Tail Wag (The Science Stuff)

You know what's AMAZING about salted caramel? It's not just delicious—it's SCIENCE! The salt makes the sweet taste SWEETER! And the sweet makes the salt taste SALTIER! It's like when I chase my tail—two good things making each other even better!

The legends at Hackney Gelato slowly cook the sugar until it's EXACTLY the right color—like a perfectly toasted dog biscuit. Then they add the salt flakes that make my tongue do the happy dance. When they mix it into our creamy gelato base, that's when the MAGIC happens!

What to Pair With Your Salted Caramel (Besides More Salted Caramel)

If you're not like me (I could eat SEVENTEEN SCOOPS of just salted caramel), here are some other flavors that go great with it:

  • Dark chocolate sorbetto (almost as good as digging up the garden!)

  • Raspberry sorbetto (fresh, sweet AND salty!)

  • In an affogato (not that I'm allowed coffee, but I've sneaked a lick or two)

  • Madagascan Vanilla gelato (simple but GOOD, like belly rubs!)

You can also put our salted caramel gelato on warm desserts like waffles or brownies.

Famous Humans Who Love Salted Caramel Almost As Much As Me

Lots of famous humans love salted caramel too! Nigella Lawson (who I would definitely let pet me) and Ina Garten are big fans. Celebrity humans like Jennifer Lawrence and Gordon Ramsay love it too! Not as much as ME, obviously, but they have good taste for humans.

I even heard that some Hollywood celebrities bring their designer dogs to get our salted caramel gelato! I'm not naming names, but let's just say I've shared my water bowl with some VERY important pups.

Why Salted Caramel Isn't Just a Fad (Like Those Light-Up Collars)

Some things are just passing fads (like when my humans bought me boots for winter—AS IF!), but salted caramel is here to STAY! It's been popular for YEARS, which in dog years is basically FOREVER.

Food experts say it has the perfect balance—fancy enough for humans who wear ties, but yummy enough for everyone else. Including dogs with sophisticated palates like yours truly!
